028: From three jobs to full-time proofreader: How Sheila reinvented her career in her 60s. Graduate interview with Sheila Prochnow

Sheila joined my Transcript Proofreading Academy while working three jobs…and (spoiler alert!) she was able to quit them all and become a full-time proofreader!
Sheila is no stranger to reinvention and hard work.
- She taught abroad in Japan and Brazil.
- She owned a café with her husband for over a decade.
- And when life threw yet another curveball her way, she relied on her resourcefulness and determination to create something new.
Now in her 60s, she’s thriving as a full-time transcript proofreader. She swapped long commutes and heavy lifting for mornings filled with coffee, work she loves, and the freedom to structure her days how she wants.
Sheila’s story is proof that no matter your age or how many jobs you’re juggling, you can start fresh and build a career that fits your life and makes you happy.

If you’re like me, it’s hard to start something new and not be instantly good at it. We go-getter people want to jump in and be the best right away.
Take proofreading, for example. We want to know yesterday how to proofread, set up our rates, and get clients. And not only do we want to know how, we want to be really good at the snap of a finger.
That pressure we put on ourselves to be perfect right from the start? It’s real!
In this podcast episode, I talk about the challenges of learning something new as an adult.
We’re used to knowing what we’re doing and being good at it! So when we pick up a new skill, like proofreading, it feels odd to get back into the mindset of letting ourselves be new.
Instead of realizing it’s okay to be a beginner, we start beating ourselves up over the impossible expectations we put on ourselves.
If you’re feeling pressure to be perfect or frustrated because you’re not where you want to be yet, this episode is a reminder from me to you that progress takes time — and that’s okay.
