The Transcript Proofreading Academy (TPA) not only ensures you graduate as a confident, experienced transcript proofreader, it also ensures you will learn how and where to find and retain consistent court reporter clients.

Here’s what you’ll achieve in each Phase:

In phase one:

Introduction to Transcript Proofreading

This phase lays the foundation for building a successful transcript proofreading business from the ground up! You’ll finish this phase with a deep understanding of your clients, legal terminology, and the unique grammar rules specific to proofreading the verbatim spoken word.

Upon enrolling, you'll join a kind, supportive Facebook community of students, graduates, myself, and my team. We interact, ask and answer questions, and support each other. Plus, you’ll get weekly group coaching sessions with me!

At the end of Phase 1, you'll take an open-book, multiple-choice grammar exam focused on common transcript errors. This exam ensures you understand the important grammar rules and are ready to succeed in Phase 2!

PHASE 2

In phase two:

build real-life experience and confidence

This phase is all about building the real-life experience and confidence needed to impress your future court reporter clients. By the end of Phase 2, you’ll master using your software, maintaining confidentiality, accommodating client preferences, and proofreading transcripts.

You'll practice on 3,200+ pages of real transcripts and receive 1:1 feedback to refine your skills. When you graduate, you won’t be a newbie! You'll be skilled and experienced!

At the end of Phase 2, after practicing proofreading real transcripts and going through your 1:1 feedback sessions, you’ll proofread a real transcript for your final exam. It’s hand-graded with detailed feedback, ensuring you have the skills to be a highly sought-after proofreader. This way, you can confidently connect with clients, knowing you’re the crème de la crème. I care deeply about you and your future clients, and I want you to graduate ready to go!

PHASE 3

In phase three:

make money as a transcript proofreader!

This is where you learn to make money as a transcript proofreader! You've worked hard to gain the necessary experience and training. Now it’s time to tackle the business and marketing side. Even if you're an introvert, you'll learn how and where to connect with your future clients, all without feeling overwhelmed, icky, or fake.

By the end of Phase 3, you'll know how to set your rates, invoice clients, navigate the proofreading process, write your specialized resume, find clients, manage your business, and be a good boss to yourself, ensuring you have the business you want.

BONUS! Along with advanced marketing and business management training, you'll gain access to my private business community where you’ll join regular Zoom sessions with me and other grads, receive client leads, and be listed in a personalized graduate directory.

LET'S DO THIS TOGETHER.

Calling all introverts, true crime lovers, typo finders, and readers! Want to become the Nancy Drew of transcripts and turn typos into cash reading true crime while working from home or traveling the world? Transcript Proofreading Academy is for you!

Why TPA is the best choice

Become a real-life Nancy Drew as a confident transcript proofreader!

You're embarking on a career path with unique challenges. While proofreading often means fixing errors and adhering to the traditional grammar rules you're accustomed to inside content like books, transcript proofreading is a very different ballgame. It's crucial to invest in training, coaching, and a community that focuses on mastering this specialized skill so you're set up for long-term success.

Transcript proofreading involves working with the verbatim transcripts court reporters create during legal proceedings, giving you a behind-the-scenes view of the legal world and witness testimony. It's flexible, allowing you to work on your schedule wherever you live.

This is the most advanced type of proofreading, dealing with legalese and the verbatim spoken word. That means you can't alter the grammar or sentence structure on the page. Your job is to fix typos and punctuation errors, find dropped/wrong words, improve readability with punctuation, and ensure consistency throughout the transcript while also following your client's preferences.

Mastering this skill requires dedication, practice, openness to feedback, and a strong work ethic. But if you're committed to your goals, it’s a fun, rewarding career that’s well worth the effort!

WHAT DO YOU MEAN AN EXAM?

Transcript Proofreading Academy

is more than a course that has everything you need to be the best transcript proofreader...

It's your stepping stone to a life filled with confidence and joy...
Because that's what being your own boss as a transcript proofreader is all about: Having a business that supports the life you want to live.

I'm ready to join!

fAQs you should read before enrolling

As soon as you enroll, you get immediate access to Phase 1 and can start working through it whenever you're ready! The units are divided into weeks to keep you on track to have your business ready to go in 8 weeks, but you can work through the course as quickly or as slowly as you like.

You'll also join myself and your fellow coursemates inside the zero-drama support community for weekly group coaching and all the support and motivation you need to love the learning process!

If you've enrolled in the full course, you will pass the grammar exam before moving on to Phase 2 and the transcript exam before moving on to Phase 3 (more details on the exams in these FAQs).

This course is a good fit for you if you love reading, fixing typos and punctuation errors, tackling a fun challenge, and working hard for yourself, and if you are fluent in conversational US English.

Beyond that, you will be dedicated to showing up for yourself, open to learning, receptive to feedback, love to research, and aren't afraid to work hard.

You are determined to make this work for you. You should also be willing to work with your peers, contribute to group discussions, and bring a positive spirit to the community. While you can be very successful as a transcript proofreader, this is not a "get rich quick doing nothing" business. It takes work and practice to learn!

Nope! I’ll teach you how -- and you’ll get plenty of practice on real-life practice transcripts (answer keys included!).

For my general proofreaders out there: Even though you already know how to proofread, you’ll need to understand how to proofread transcripts, which is a very specific type of proofreading and not like working with books, websites, etc.

Location doesn’t matter! Transcripts are sent digitally, so as long as you have the internet to receive and send jobs, you can proofread wherever you want!

My course focuses on US court reporting and setting up a business as a US citizen. So if you are a citizen from another country, the steps for how to set up a business in your country will probably be a little different than here in the US. I always recommend connecting with a local CPA to ensure your business is set up correctly. If your currency is different from USD, you will also need a way to convert currency when you invoice clients (PayPal will convert most currencies!).

You should be fluent in conversational US English because transcripts are not formal English by any stretch. Court reporters are extremely particular about working with proofreaders who are completely comfortable with conversational US English, which includes being able to work with odd sentence formations and colloquialisms. You’re the one who understands your command of the English language -- be honest with yourself!

The grammar and spellings focused on in this course are US English because this course focuses on working with US court reporters.

Transcript proofreading doesn’t require a lot of supplies!

You will need a laptop/desktop or iPad, internet, and proofreading software. I cover your proofing software options (and how to use them) inside the course.

Pricing ranges from free to $9.99 depending on what you prefer to use. You do not need software until Phase 2. A grammar reference manual is required in Phase 2; it's less than $20 on Amazon.

Your state may require you to register your business and there can be some cost with that. That varies per state (I help you with those steps inside the course!).

There are other optional resources (additional grammar books/online subscriptions) you can purchase that I highly recommend inside the course.

You sure don't! I'm a college dropout myself, and it's never once been a problem to get clients. Court reporters care about what you know and if you're trustworthy and easy to work with...not if you have a college degree.

What's more, with the income potential you can have as a transcript proofreader, you can make similar to the average college graduate a year...with a fraction of the cost and time with Transcript Proofreading Academy.

You have access to the program for life, so the only time limit is whatever you want it to be.
Most students who are actively involved spend anywhere from 5-20 hours a week working through the course, attending the group coaching lives, and getting real-life experience under their belts with the transcripts inside the course.

I know everyone's schedule is different and you have a life outside of work and this course, so while it is an intensive course and you will have to show up for yourself to make it happen, I put everything and only the things you need to know inside the course to respect your time.

The multiple-choice grammar exam covers punctuation and spellings discussed inside the grammar masterclass. It is required to pass the grammar exam before moving on to Phase 2.

The transcript exam is a transcript you will proofread to demonstrate you are skilled as a proofreader and ready to work with clients. The exam is returned to you with personalized feedback so you continue to grow. It is required to pass the transcript exam before moving on to Phase 3. If you practice properly, you can pass both your grammar and transcript exam on your first attempt.

I don’t believe in making exams that are impossible to pass once you know what you’re doing.
The exams are there to demonstrate you know the practical, real-life skills you’ll need as a proofreader. I’d be doing both you and CRs a huge disservice to teach you how to get jobs if you aren’t ready to get jobs. Because the course is self-paced, you can practice as much as you like before taking your exams. The grammar exam is completely open book. The transcript exam is a real-life transcript.

There is no limit on how many times you can take the exams; there are retake fees to encourage you to take learning seriously.

With all the in-depth training, over 3,200 pages of transcripts to practice on, feedback sessions, and support from myself and other students and grads, there is no reason to fail if you apply yourself!

Transcripts are real life, so there are jobs that are brutally graphic and detailed, ranging from murder, molestation, rape, kidnapping, etc. These types of cases come primarily from court reporters who work in criminal court and that’s all they do. You can typically avoid this type of content by working with CRs who work civil cases.

You can also add a caveat that you don’t proofread graphic transcripts. If this would be too triggering for you in general though, transcript proofreading is probably not a good fit for you.

On the flip side, if you are expecting transcripts to read just like Law & Order, you’ll be surprised too. Even though I’ve read some unforgettable murders, kidnappings, and rapes, I’ve also read countless pages covering construction defects, medical malpractice, car wrecks, divorces, slip-and-falls, property and mineral rights, city suits, and expert economists.

No. Per the terms and conditions you agree to when you enroll, your course login is for you alone, and you cannot share the contents of the course or transfer your account to someone else. Besides receiving access to the course itself, you also receive access to the community with individualized attention, live coaching calls, and the grammar exam, and as you progress through Phase 2, you also receive 1:1 feedback sessions and the transcript exam. These cannot be divided among two or more people. There are no refunds.

Testimonials, feedback, and reviews are directly from students. They have not been compensated for their comments. Success/results/income is not guaranteed and can vary from student to student. Proofreading is not a "get rich" and "get rich quick doing nothing" business. It takes diligence, learning, and showing up for yourself to get the results you want. No coaching, training, or course will give you the life you want to have; you have to put in the work. Your success is up to you!
