Hi! I’m Elizabeth, The Proofreading Business Coach.

I teach readers and grammar lovers how to turn their passion for words into a freelance work-from-home business.

Life’s too short to have a job you hate. One that sucks the life, energy, and joy out of you and takes you away from what you like to do — just so you can get a paycheck.

It’s time you got to work whenever and wherever you want, set your own schedule, be your own boss, and actually make money doing what you LOVE to do — read and fix typos and grammar errors!

I’m here to help you do exactly that by giving you the training, support, and cheerleading you need to start your proofreading business…today!

What kind of proofreading sounds like the most fun for you to do?

There are two main types of proofreaders: general proofreaders and transcript proofreaders.

General Proofreaders

General proofreaders proof books of all genres, podcast notes, blogs, websites, social media posts, newsletters, college papers — just about anything that’s written and meant for public reading.

• General proofreaders are the final step in the writing process. You find and fix grammar errors and typos, watch for formatting issues, maybe make a few minor word changes, correct subject/verb agreement issues — you know the list! Essentially, you make everything grammatically correct.

• General proofreaders require less upfront training to learn how to proofread and can therefore get their businesses started in a shorter time frame.

• Lower training cost to get started.

• Perfect for you if you’re not sure what type of proofing you want to work in and would like to try different areas of proofing before settling into a genre/niche; OR if you know what niche you want to proof and it includes a general proofing niche.

• Can be more challenging to get higher-paying repeat clients when first starting without a niche.

• Depending on the general proofing niche, general proofers often have to spend more time marketing throughout your career due to lower repeat clients.

Transcript Proofreaders

Transcript proofreaders specifically work with court reporters to proofread their transcripts.

• Transcripts are verbatim documents of the spoken word that the court reporter writes during legal proceedings.

The court reporting industry is a highly skilled industry. Called the “guardians of the record,” court reporters are responsible for flawlessly transcribing the spoken word of legal proceedings — and it’s your job as their proofreader to help them make sure their transcripts are turn-in ready.

Transcripts are unlike any other written material you may be used to proofreading. Because court reporters take down the verbatim spoken word, you proofread transcripts for readability. Sometimes the grammar is all over the place but you can’t change what’s said since it’s verbatim! It’s a unique skill — but it’s fun!

• Transcript proofreaders must be specifically trained in proofreading transcripts and understand the court reporting world so they can show up and be an exceptional proofreader in a very tightly knit community.

• Training cost is higher to get started due to in-depth training required.

• Perfect for you if you love crime shows, books, and podcasts and if you think you’ll enjoy getting a behind-the-scenes view of the legal world.

• Offers the potential for consistent work, less ongoing marketing after your clients are built up, and higher overall income.

Why learn with Elizabeth?

I’m Elizabeth, The Proofreading Business Coach. I’ve proofed in a lot of niches since I started in 2006, transcript proofreading being my specialty and very favorite!

I love proofreading and the freedom and flexibility it lets me have, all while getting to read for a living. But it didn’t happen overnight! I went through a LOT of trial and error as I tried to learn how to get clients and manage my business.

There’s no reason for you to have to start from square one like I did! I want you to have the awesome proofing life I have without having to figure it all out on your own. Stand on my shoulders and GO!

About Elizabeth

  • My life word is freedom. I don’t like being told what to do. So I help others learn how to be proofreaders so they can have a life where they’re free to do what they want and need to do in life without feeling tied down to a job they don’t like, doesn’t pay enough, and confines them to a rigid schedule.
  • I love to teach people how to find proofreading clients without feeling icky, salesy, or fake.
  • My mom taught me how to read when I was 3.
  • My husband, Jonathan, is my favorite person in the world, and we both get to work from home together. He recently started pastoring a little country church in Oklahoma.
  • I’m a Christian and everything I am and do is because of and for Him who loves me with an everlasting love.
  • I love trying out local restaurants and playing Eurogames.
  • I went to college for English literature but dropped out. Not having a degree has never once held me back from any proofing job I wanted (and I can teach you how to get clients without a degree, certifications, or tons of experience!).

Let's hang out on social media!

Testimonials, feedback, and reviews are directly from students. They have not been compensated for their comments. Success/results/income is not guaranteed and can vary from student to student. Transcript proofreading is not a get-rich-quick business. It takes diligence, learning, and showing up for yourself to get the results you want. No course will give you the life you want to have unless you put in the work. Your success is up to you -- I'm here to support you!
