This homeschool mom of four got her first proofreading client and found her niche (even before finishing her coursework)

Lisa is a homeschooling mom of four who put in the work and got her first proofreading client and found her niche before she even finished Make Money Proofreading.

I am blown away with how determined Lisa was to make her proofreading dream happen!  Even though her life is full, she still found time to work on her business. Talk about giving us some serious motivation!

Lisa gets the secret to being a successful proofreader. It isn’t just purchasing a course and letting it sit in your inbox. It isn’t just wishing you were a proofreader. It isn’t even reading through a course.

It’s taking what you know and learn and putting it into practice. It takes work, but it’s worth it. Lisa is proof of that!

I’m so honored to have Lisa here on the Make Money Proofreading blog so we can celebrate her success with her.

Tell me a little bit about you! What’s your background?

I have been working from home for 14 years as a transcriptionist, first in medical transcription and then in general transcription.

I am also a homeschooling mom of four, so grading papers has been a part of life for many years as well. Because I’m a transcriptionist, I have been informally proofreading my own typing for many years. Recently though, I got my first proofreading client!

What got you interested in proofreading?

I tutored English in college and have always been a stickler for correct grammar and misspelled words. I even make sure I have correct spelling and punctuation in my text messages and very rarely abbreviate anything!

I see typos all around me, comma splices in children’s books, blatantly misspelled words in news stories and even headlines. It really drives me crazy, and I just want to fix everything. Proofreading is very satisfying in that regard!

How long did it take to get your first client?

It took just a few months! I actually hadn’t even finished the course yet. The MMP Facebook group is amazing and I landed a client through a job posting there.

The best part is that, through this client, I was able to figure out my niche. So my first formal proofreading job was not only a great learning experience but also a huge help in narrowing that down.

(Elizabeth hopping in here to brag on Lisa: Check out the review she got from her first client! Lisa shared it with us in our Facebook community so we could celebrate with her!)

What’s the most rewarding part of proofreading?

Being able to actually fix errors is the most rewarding part of proofreading for me. It is extremely satisfying to be able to fix those errors AND get paid to do it! Also, having another income stream is always a good thing.

What do you want to share with someone excited about getting into proofreading?

I definitely think you should take the plunge and go for it. If you pay attention to anything online these days, you’ll see that there is a shortage of proofreaders in the world! The work is out there for sure.

What’s your favorite part of Make Money Proofreading?

I really liked the marketing section where Elizabeth walks you through the different social media channels and how to leverage them to market yourself.

Also, Elizabeth herself is a WEALTH of information, and has been a huge help to me with any questions I have. She has been encouraging and reassuring. You already have the skills. Now use them!

Wrapping it up

Lisa! I can’t thank you enough for being on the MMP blog today and sharing your story with us. It’s been so fun working with you to help you get your business off the ground. Hearing your story motivates me, and I know it will encourage other proofreaders to put in the work and be successful like you too.
